Fugitive Italian banker arrested

The Italian authorities say one of the country's leading fugitives, the financier Licio Gelli, has been arrested in the French Mediterranean city of Cannes. (The arrest was a joint operation by French and Italian police.) Mr Gelli disappeared while under house arrest in May -- a month after he was sentenced to twelve years' imprisonment for his part in one of Italy's main corruption scandals, the collapse of the Banco Ambrosiano in 1982.

Correspondents say he is also suspected of involvement in other scandals.
