THE distinctive Egyptian Revival-style Emulation Hall in Canterbury has been added to the Victorian Heritage Register.

Built by the Freemasons in 1927-28, the hall provides a rare glimpse of Egyptian-style architecture that was popular in the early 1920s after the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb and the interest generated by artefacts brought home by Diggers from World War I.

Heritage Council of Victoria chairman Daryl Jackson said freemasonry had played an important cultural role in Victoria.

The heritage register is the official listing of more than 2000 places and objects that have been assessed as being significant to the state.
