MANILA, Philippines—“I am Abba Tolibas of Cebu City, a reader of your column. I am curious about certain topics. Here are my questions:
1. “What or who are the Illuminati? Are they real?
2. “What is the New World Order? What is its purpose and how does it work?
3. “What is Freemasonry? What are its goals and principles? What is its role in the New World Order? Is it true that you are a Mason and that you belong to its Inner Circle, as my father says?”
4. “What is the Theosophical Society? Who is Helena P. Blavatsky? What do you think about her and her work? Is she involved in this New World Order?”
5. “What or who is the antichrist? Is it the Pope? Is the Vatican involved in the New World Order plan?”
All I can give you here is a brief explanation on the above topics but there’s a lot more you can read in various books.
1. There are several groups known as the Illuminati. One group refers to the followers of Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772), the Swedish scientist, philosopher and mystic, who claimed he could converse with angels and other higher beings. He wrote his visions through automatic writing.
But the more popular group of Illuminati, according to Donald Watson in his book, “The Dictionary of Mind and Spirit,” is a materialist sect founded by seer and visionary, Adam Weishaupt (1748-1830) in Bavaria in 1776. The aim of the group was “to propagate a religion based on enlightened reason which was open to direct influence by Divine Reason and not dependent on Church or state. They used symbolisms borrowed from Freemasons. They regarded themselves as the creative minority in what was to become a new democratic world order.”
2. The New World Order could mean different things to different people and schools of thought. One is the above definition of the New World Order propounded by the Illuminati. Another group sees the New World Order as the culmination of the Age of Aquarius where peace will at last reign on planet Earth and when there will only be one world religion and one world leader.
3. I am not a member of Freemasonry and have never been one, although I have a brother in the Philippines who is a member. According to Donald Watson, “Little is known of the true origins and early development of Freemasonry, much of its history having been constructed retrospectively. It probably grew out of the medieval guild of English masons as a religious fraternity which made itself responsible for social duties as burying their dead and insuring the widowed against poverty, as well as guarding the secrets of their craft. Then the brotherhood started also concerning itself with the religious and moral education of its members. Following the Reformation, Freemasonry co-existed comfortably with the church in protestant countries but tended to be antagonistic to organized Christianity in Catholic countries… Some of its basic aims are to strive for moral betterment, work for the welfare of others and bring about a universal league of mankind. Freemasonry is basically a male preserve, although a form of it exists called Co-Masonry, which admits both sexes.” According to some sources, many of the original framers of the US Constitution were Freemasons.
4. The Theosophical Society was founded by Helena P. Blavatsky and Col H.S. Olcott in New York in 1875. It is open to any adherent of the world’s faiths and requiring simply that one support the Society in its three objectives, namely:
“To form a nucleus of the universal Brotherhood of Humanity without distinction of race, creed, sex, caste or color.
“To encourage the study of comparative religion, philosophy and science.
“To investigate the unexplained laws of nature and the powers latent in nature.”
The basic teachings of the Theosophical Society are embodied in two massive books of Helena Blavatsky: “The Secret Doctrine” and “Isis Unveiled.”
What do I think of Blavatsky? I think she’s a great spiritual teacher and visionary. About her work? I see nothing incompatible with what I know from other esoteric sources. There is a branch of Theosophy in the Philippines, for those who are interested in it. It is headed by Vic Hao Chin and its headquarters is located at No. 1 Iba St., Quezon City. I am not a member of this society.
5. There are many theories of who the anti-Christ is, and therefore I do not want to add to its number. I don’t even know if there is really such a person as the anti-Christ who is supposed to appear and oppose the teachings of Christ. Yes, there is a theory that has been advanced that the anti-Christ is the Catholic Pope himself, because the Church, according to its proponents, has changed and misinterpreted Christ’s original teachings. But others say the anti-Church was Napoleon, Rasputin or Hitler. No one knows. And I don’t know either.
