Regina's Freemasons announced on Monday that they won't sell their Masonic Temple, which is next door to the downtown library, to make way for a bigger facility.

Plans to expand the library have included one proposal to build a new complex that would include the space where the temple currently stands.

To do that, library officials proposed buying the property from the Masons last year.

But members of the temple's five owner lodges voted during the past month against selling the property, according to the Regina Masonic Temple Company.

The Masons have been operating the stone temple at the same location since it was built in 1926, according to a news release.

The building is part of the City of Regina's municipal heritage conservation park, which surrounds Victoria Park.
