Al Gore Wrong Again

Posted by ReasonMcLucus at 05:54 on 16 Nov 2007

On October 14, 1997, Vice President Al Gore said,  “For those who argue that global warming is already changing the world’s climate, this year’s El Nino weather front is more than enough evidence”, the audience was told by Gore. In the next day, a report by the San Francisco Chronicle said: “Gore links El Nino to Global Warming”. The Vice President stated at the summit that growing frequency of El Nino episodes could be connected to the gradual heating of the atmosphere caused by emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.

Ten years later residents in Argentina and Brazil are wondering if this winter will ever end. Buenos Aires recorded this Thursday (November 15th) the lowest  November temperature in 90 years. Temperature in the Downtown weather station reached 2.5C. Since records began more than a century ago, only two days had colder lows in November. It was in 1914 (1.6) and 1917 (2.4). And ninety years ago the urban heat island effect was much less pronounced than nowadays.  In Brazil's southernmost province Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil temperatures fell to 2.3C.  In Sao Joaquim Monday's (Nov., 12) the temperature was -1.2 C with frost.

The culprit is a developing la Nina , a cooling of the water in the eastern Pacific along the South American coast,  that some climatologists believe could indicate a  return to the la Nina dominated situation  that dominated from1947 to 1977.   El Ninos, a warming of East Pacific waters. have been more common since then.  Some climatologists believe the el Ninos  may have caused what the IPCC calls  "global warming".

NASA has recently indicated that the circulation of the Arctic Ocean has changed from the counterclockwise circulation of the 1990's to the pre-1990 clockwise circulation which could result in a cooling trend in the Arctic.

Such a shift would be consist with the projected cooling trend mentioned in the previous post.

See comment below for another warm location with a cold weather problem.

Terribleturk 16 Nov 2007 07:16

There are two things keeping this scam going:
Twits as above who 'believe' instead of know things; and
Grant money to 'study' things to death that feeds the universities and government research bureaus and that is generously provided by government to quiet the fears of the citizens. Which fears are reinforced by the studies. College boys are no fools. They will find the results that lead to more fear-based funding--a conveyor belt of MONEY.

To Wise Ralph in West China

Ralph, despite what you hear from the liberal media the majority Americans could not care less what anyone else in the world thinks of us. Our country is superior to your's in every way possible. You don't see people risking life and limb to get into your country do you? No, in fact they would risk life and limb to get out. Also, someday you weak minded and easily swayed people will discover that global warming was the biggest hoax ever pulled on the human race. Do you have any idea what a money maker this will be to liberal governments? I did not think so. I implore you to open your mind and do some thinking on your own and stop listening to all the "sky is falling" alarmist out there who enjoy manipulating minions like yourself.

While it is certainly true that many in America are not concerned about what people in other countries think about us, it is also true that we should not use name calling as a way of debating issues. There are many countries who owe their freedom and in some cases their very existance to the U.S. That fact requires no special favors, but one has to wonder why the scorn? We are a country that does good things and some not so good. When the chips are down we will be on your side no matter how you treat us.

In the 70's they were trying to scare us saying the we were heading toward the next ice age. They then said DDT was going to kill us all when it has been proven safe for people and animals. then it was CFC's then Y2K. All hype and theories and lies. When global warming is shown to be false they will never admit it but just move on to another world ending tragedy. I call it the chicken little syndrome, always that the sky is falling.

penicillin, any of a group of chemically similar substances obtained from molds of the genus Penicillium that were the first antibiotic agents to be used successfully in the treatment of bacterial infections in humans. The antagonistic effect of penicillin on bacteria was first observed by the Scottish biologist Sir Alexander Fleming in 1928. Although he recognized the therapeutic potential of penicillin, it was not until 1941 that a group of biologists working in England, including Oxford's Sir H. W. Florey and E. B. Chain, purified the substance and established its effectiveness against infectious organisms and its lack of toxicity to humans. The first successful treatment of a patient with penicillin occurred in New Haven, Conn., in 1942. Despite the development of hundreds of different antibiotics in recent decades, penicillin remains important in antibiotic therapy.
Small amounts of the antibiotic were first obtained from strains of the mold species P. notatum grown in fermentation bottles. During World War II need for the drug spurred development of better production methods; in the current method highly productive strains of Penicillium are grown in a cornsteep liquor medium in fermentation vats. The main form of penicillin produced by this method is benzylpenicillin, which, like all penicillins, is a derivative of 6-aminopenicillanic acid. Phenoxymethyl penicillin, which can be given orally because it is resistant to degradation by stomach acid, is produced by the species P. chrysogenum.

Facts - past and present

Real Thinker 17 Nov 2007 04:17

Global temperatures have been as much as 15degrees F warmer in prehistoric times. Guess what, life flourished everywhere. We have a fraction of the diversity today as we did then. This is known from fossils and pollen records gathered from core samples.

Glaciers are melting from the Arctic and mountains. Why are they melting in places where the temperatures are never above freezing? Is it really "melting"? Ever heard of sublimation? It's not from heat.

So global warming has been happening for 10 years or so? Has any ocean actually risen? Wasn't that suppose to happen? It hasn't changed at all on my coast. Believe me, we would hear it everyday if it was occurring.

Ask questions, be intelligent.

Listening to Al Gore on the Environment is like saying Granny Clampett is a real doctor. He is a joke to people who don't have a political agenda.

What kills me is that the very groups that in the past have been telling us the governments of the world are corrupt and can't be trusted are now trumpeting every gloom and doom syllable uttered by them.

By the way WiseRalph, the 2400 scientists you refer to are comprised of governmental representatives of which many are not scientists. Just the other day one of the actual scientists on that panel resigned and refused to accept his portion of the prize given to our beloved Mr. Gore. Please see the National Geographic Global Warming Map from last June. The map supports global warming, However--look at the rise in temps over 400,000 years. They go up the same every 100,000 years. Looks very consistant--It would appear that we are in a cycle. It would also appear that we have slightly lower temps than the highs over the 400,000 years. There is a lot going on. The Earth rotates around the Sun in a circle, and then an elypse over the years bringing the Earth closer to the Sun. Also, the rotation on the Axis changes, bringing different climates. So, more information is needed, rather than shooting from the hip, and assigning Noble Prizes. I would like to see an entire study, front and center, with all data presented.

ExPat in London 17 Nov 2007 12:00

I'm wondering how scientists came to the conclusion that we all need to pay a certain amount of money for our CO2 emissions?

Considering that most of the 20th century warming occurred before 1950, the NOAA had to state publicly that 1934 and not 1998 was the hottest year on record due to "data errors", combined with the Sun's impact quoted here already and cyclical patterns the Earth has demonstrated for years I am quite skeptical.

But, if the sheep want to believe rather than research then that is their choice. Just realize you are being taxed for this blind belief.

To jump into the "American's are the worst on the planet" debate; yes, some people are ignorant to other cultures and other views of people in the world but that can be stated for any country. I have encountered that in my travels and now where I live, in London. But, that isn't indicative of ALL English people. Just like you can't judge American's by the little that you know about them.

Prejudice is formed out of ignorance and as we move to a more globalized world we have to put aside these prejudices and understand that there are good and bad people from every society.

And so it is with so-called Global Warming (GW) - while there may be climate changes, it appears to be a natural cycle and not a thing man can do will affect it one way or the other.

Unfortunately, the world is also plagued by those who 'believe' rather than think. These are the same folk, who in generations past, freed Barrabas rather than Jesus, supported bolshevism rather than freedom, brandished the Little Red Books of Mao and stuck their arms high in the air as Der Fuehrer drove past.

Think people, think. Don't 'believe' --- as that has been the avenue to tragedy time and again throughout history. Check the facts and you will find that GW is just the latest in a long line of government ruses used to seize power from the populations.

China To Be Dirtiest Country in 21st Century

Realitycheck 17 Nov 2007 14:28

WiseRalph, it's admirable to see that you are a traveled person. What's disappointing is that your travels have not opened up your eyes to the communist rule that you live under is one of deceit and deception. And you are neither wise nor educated if you are reading lies and not reality. The reality is that while China may be leading in "environmental friendly" technologies (which I'd disagree), the fact is that China is growing more rapidly and on a current pace to producing more of your "global warming" emissions than any other country in the world. And there is no intent on doing anything about it. Go look up the Kyoto Treaty and see that China is allowed more emissions than the U.S. Why? Because you have to be allowed to "catch up" to U.S. industrialization. Here's just a few links. I'm sure you can find more. So let's not hear any more propaganda about how bad the United States of America is. Clean up your own house before complaining about your neighbor's.

Well from what I have read so far some have checked out the data and seen the problems with the IPCC spin and some have just listened to the press.
Now is time to put down the news papers and turn off the boob tube.
As far as the 2400 to 2500 scientist that the IPCC clams you should start checking out the names and who they are. Most are not climatologists or meteorologist. Most that are scientist. (A very large number of the names are not) Lets start with some facts.
1. Any group that uses ice core data as there only source is not playing with a full deck of cards. Ice melts in worm periods and that data is lost. When it starts cooling and ice starts to collect again we only see the last part of the picture. All data that come before the warm period and all of the warm period is lost.
2. CO2 is not the cause of warming but a result of warming. The oceans are great store houses of CO2 and as the waters warm they release CO2. As they cool they absorb the CO2. Ice core data only sees the cooling and the drop in CO2 and not the relation ship.

Now lets look at the time line. Most of the warming started about 200 years ago at the end of the little ice age. Over 50 % of that warming happened before 1900. In the last 100 years we had cooling from 1940 to 1980.
From the 1400’s to the late 1600’s we had a very cold period called the little ice age. From around 1100 to the late 1300’s we had a very warm period call the Medieval warm period. It was much warmer than it is now and we had very high CO2 levels at the end of that period. Where did all that CO2 come from? Well Co2 levels lag temperature rise by 150 years or more.
Now for another warm period. The Holocene maximum which was also know as the bronzes age. From about 6000 t0 4000 BC. It was much warmer then now. By the way how many cars did they have back then?

As you can see what we are seeing now is not caused by man. It is a natural event in our weather systems.
I have studied the raw data from both ice cores and ocean floor cores and they agree on the parts that data for both. As noted earlier that ice melts and the data is lost. So we used ice core data to check that we were seeing the same in the ocean floor core data. By using the mud cores we have a complete record. The IPCC worked only from ice core data. The IPCC report also showed the same data that I pointed out above. They just did not point it out as it did not fit there agenda.
If you want to know why most of the studies say the same thing is you have to follow the money. If you get a grant to study warming and you come back and report that it is not happening you do not get anymore grants and you are out of a job. Global warming is a 10 billion dollar a year industry and growing.
One last thing I also studied the relation ship to sun spot data to temperature and that revels some interesting data as low sun spot periods and low temperature periods match.
Open your eyes and look at the data not the alarmist such as Al Gore.

texasmom 17 Nov 2007 16:56

I am certainly glad that global warming fanatics were not around as the ice age was coming to an end, they would find a way to maintain the climate and we wouldn't have what we have today.

I am with the cheif of NASA, Griffin, who said he doubted global warming is "a problem we must wrestle with," and that it is arrogant to believe that today's climate is the best we could have and that "we need to take steps to make sure that it doesn't change."

Ignoring the Sun

George B 17 Nov 2007 17:35

Are we having global warming? Yep! BUT!!!! Those who are crusading for global being caused by man are ignoring one fact. If the sun gets warmer, so do we. If it gets cooler, so do we, and there's absolutely nothing we can do about it, either way. The sun is so much more powerful than anything all the nations on earth could do working together that the effort would be futile, absolutely futile. The liberal's position on this issue appears to be based on their belief of their own self importance in the ways of the universe, that they think they can overpower the power of the sun in order to get the results they want. Hogwash! Total, complete and absolute hogwash.

if you believe in global warming

jamesj 17 Nov 2007 18:07

you should consider that politicians have been caught up for years 'debating' the cause, and proposing new ways to control you, in order to 'prevent' it - even though most believers agree that it may not be preventable

believers should start focusing on preparing to live in this world instead of arguing - move to higher ground, improve infrastructure to cope with the 'violent natural events' that are 'imminent', change the way food is supplied, invest in emergency response tools, etc...

i cannot take you all seriously, because you all do not act like practical people standing in the face of this 'devastating' inevitability

Ugh

From Windycorner above: "The climate of a planet is too complex to be affected by human population."

Everyone on both sides can flaunt easily manipulatable statistics supporting one side or the other. Bottom line: everyone's speculating. No one has a true crytal ball on this. Hell, we can't effectively forecast local weather past three days. But to arrogantly profess that because of the complexity of the systems we can NOT have an effect is what has been the bane of man-kind since the beginnig of history.

Unbelievable.

bentspoon 17 Nov 2007 19:44

My comment above, however, is not an implicit acceptance of GW. I err on the sun-spot theory side, but if the truth usually ends up being somewhere in the middle of two viewpoints' perspectives, then one might draw a conclusion that we are exacerbating the situation...not causing.

I believe that WiseRalph is a great part of the GW problem, because he uses so much oil traveling around the world for what? Maybe, if he walks more he will have a better understanding of the world.
I believe that everyone should do as much as they can and want to keep our planet clean and everything will be OK.
I believe that the real danger are the terrorists, Al Gore isn't dangerous he is just wrong.
And I believe in the great USA because we are open to change, because we learn from our mistakes, even if takes long time, because americans are a great bunch of people of all races, colors, believes and ideas.

The Era of Global Warming is here

gary1234 17 Nov 2007 20:21

One of the easy ways to reduce CO2 polution by humans is to set a world wide daily breath standard.

Joggers, to mention just one enviornmentally unfriendly group, spew CO2 in the air at a disgusting rate -- and most likely many feel quite remorseful.

This guilt could be avoided if there were an exchange in which people, such as myself, who do not engage in activities which cause me to use more than my share of air could sell some excess breaths to people who just can't slow down.

Global warming religion

Sagacious One 17 Nov 2007 21:21

Global warming heretics exist and Al Gore and his minions are on a global witch hunt to find and convert them. Their efforts would have made Tomás de Torquemada proud. The symbolic torture and burning at the state of anyone who would speak against GW is every bit as damaging, and sometimes just as deadly, as Torquemada’s best efforts in the Spanish Inquisition.

Al Gore has wondered aloud at the wisdom of the public media to seek out and/or publish dissenting opinions about GW. He refuses to debate the issue, even though it would clearly identify the above mentioned heretics and justify their summary execution.

That global warming has taken on the attributes of a fanatical religion is being more clearly demonstrated daily. Belittling critics, silencing dissenters, Al Gore and true believers refuse to debate the issue, considering it already decided and accepted as truth. Those objecting to the validity of GW are anathema as surely as Galileo by his rejection of the RC church beliefs of the movement of solar system.

I applaud those with the courage to stand up and speak out against the false doctrine of manmade GW.
