Chattanooga police say Shriner parade crash was 'freak accident'

August 13, 2007

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - Chattanooga police are describing a Shriner's Parade dune buggy crash that injured eight people as a freak accident.

Police say the two vehicles were driving in circles around one another in the parade Saturday morning when one struck the other, propelling it into onlookers.

The driver of the car that was struck as well two other adults and two children, ages 3 and 7, were transported to Erlanger Hospital.

Police spokesman Rick Mincy said today that the 3-year-old child suffered a leg fracture and an adult suffered a broken leg. He said the other injuries were less serious.

Mincy said no charges have been filed but an investigation is continuing.

Mincy says he doesn't believe they were careless. The police spokesman says it was just a freak accident. He says the Shriners probably do a parade every week somewhere in the United States.
