Modern take on Mozart classic

19 Feb 09

by Brent O'Neill

IPSWICH-BASED Mozart fans can expect the unexpected next month when the Austrian’s classic opera The Magic Flute is brought to the Civic Hall stage.

The musical, composed more than 200 years ago, has been transformed by comedic opera company Co-Opera for the March 10 performance, with Mozart’s famous tunes played out in a 1960s restaurant.

“It’s centred on two male main characters and one female. Tamino is sent on a quest to rescue Pamina, the daughter of an evil queen. On the journey with Tamino is the restaurant’s bird catcher, Papageno,” said Jeremy Tatchell, who plays Papageno.

“It’s sort of a fantasy piece and is based on a lot of Masonic elements, as Mozart himself used to be a mason. It’s a search for truth and love and everything that’s pure.”

The show travels to Ipswich as part of a three-month tour.

The show will be at Ipswich Civic Hall on March 10 at 7.30pm, with tickets priced at $29.50 for adults and $27.50 for concessions.
