Globe and Mail Liberals swing abortion wedge at Josée Verner Tuesday, May 18, 2010 Jane Taber Bro. Michael Ignatieff’s Liberals are trying to drive wedges in the Bro. Harper government over the abortion issue – this, after a senior Quebec cabinet minister criticized the views of Catholic Cardinal who supported the government’s decision to keep access to safe abortion out of its G8 maternal health program. Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Josée Verner says Cardinal Marc Ouellet’s weekend remarks were “unacceptable.” The Roman Catholic Primate of Canada caused a stir by saying abortion is a moral crime, even in the case of rape victims. The Liberals jumped on divisions within the Bro. Harper cabinet spurred by the case. “If Minister Verner truly thought Cardinal Ouellet’s remarks were ‘unacceptable’ she should have fought her government’s decision to cut off funding to aid agencies that support reproductive rights in developing countries – including those where rape is used as a weapon of war,” says opposition talking points circulated to supporters and MPs this morning. ... “There is one goal here,” the Tory official noted, “to save the lives of millions of children and hundreds of thousands of mothers in the developing world. Each and every minute, hundreds of children and mothers die because they don’t have access to clean water, health professionals, or much-needed immunizations. |
