The Uncounted Enemy: A Vietnam Deception

CBS Reports documentary broadcast January 23, 1982

‘He has met his ‘Master’ in the Field…’

-President Lyndon Johnson to General William Westmoreland

December 23, 1967

Bro. Westmoreland v. CBS

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Westmoreland v. CBS was a $120 million libel suit brought in 1982 by former U.S. Army Chief of Staff General William Westmoreland against CBS, Inc. for broadcasting on its program CBS Reports a documentary entitled The Uncounted Enemy: A Vietnam Deception. Westmoreland also sued the documentary’s narrator, investigative reporter Mike Wallace; the producer, investigative journalist and best-selling author George Crile, and the former CIA analyst, Sam Adams, who originally broke the story on which the broadcast was based.

Westmoreland’s claims were governed by the landmark New York Times Co. v. Sullivan decision, which held that, in order to recover for defamation, a “public figure” like Westmoreland must prove that the defendant made the statements in question with “actual malice” (essentially, with knowledge, or reckless disregard, of falsity).[1]

The suit was originally filed in state court in South Carolina, but was transferred to the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.

The trial ended in February 1985 when the case was settled out of court just before it would have gone to the jury.[2]

U.S. Army General William C. Westmoreland served four years in Vietnam, from 1964 to 1968, as COMUSMACV—Commander U.S. Military Assistance Command Vietnam. He was in command during the Tet Offensive, a surprise, country-wide attack on the U.S. forces by the combined forces of the National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam and the Vietnam People’s Army in 1968. The attack is widely viewed as having contributed to a growing perception in the United States that the U.S. had underestimated enemy strength and resolve, and that, in contrast to assurances from Westmoreland and the Johnson administration, there was no “light at the end of the tunnel.” Walter Cronkite visited Vietnam in February 1968, in the immediate aftermath of Tet, and returned home and gave his famous “mired in a stalemate” on-air editorial. “To say that we are closer to victory today is to believe, in the face of the evidence, the optimists who have been wrong in the past. To suggest we are on the edge of defeat is to yield to unreasonable pessimism. To say that we are mired in stalemate seems the only realistic, yet unsatisfactory, conclusion.”[3] Several weeks later, President Johnson announced that he would not seek reelection.

CBS broadcast the documentary on January 23, 1982.[4] It contended that Westmoreland had contributed to the public reaction to Tet by manipulating intelligence about enemy strength in order to create the impression of progress.[1] Westmoreland contended that politics had not influenced the intelligence reports of his command.[5] Intelligence officers working under Westmoreland and contemporaneous classified documents supported the documentary’s contention that Army intelligence in Westmoreland’s command had been manipulated for political purposes. Other officers denied any such manipulation.

Shortly after trial in the Westmoreland case began, another famous libel trial got underway in the same federal court house: Then former Israeli Defense Minister Ariel Sharon‘s suit against TIME magazine. Sharon challenged one passage in a lengthy article detailing the findings of the official Israeli investigation into Sharon’s responsibility for the Sabra and Shatila Massacre of Palestinians by Phalangist forces during the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982. On January 25, 1985, the jury in the Sharon case found for the defendant while the Westmoreland v. CBS trial was still in progress. The Sharon jury stated that TIME acted “negligently and carelessly” but did not find evidence of actual malice.[1]

Summary judgment motion

CBS made a motion for a summary judgment, claiming immunity from libel for doing a commentary on a public figure under the precedent established in New York Times v. Sullivan. At the onset, the presiding judge ruled that under New York Times Co. v. Sullivan and the First Amendment, Westmoreland, as a public figure, must prove by “clear and convincing evidence” that CBS acted with actual malice in gathering the evidence and putting it together in the documentary. This is legally a heavy burden of proof and a higher standard than a nonpublic figure would need to sue for defamation.[6]

A conservative public-interest law firm, Capital Legal Foundation, brought the suit on September 13, 1982 on Westmoreland’s behalf, and its president, Dan Burt, served as Westmoreland’s pro bono attorney.[7] The suit was funded by grants from several conservative organizations, such as the Richard Mellon Scaife Foundation, the John M. Olin Foundation, and the Smith Richardson Foundation whose goals were to kill CBS Reports and turn back the 1964 New York Times v. Sullivan rule.[8] CBS’s defense was led by David Boies of the firm Cravath, Swaine & Moore.

Westmoreland’s case went to trial in October 1984. Westmoreland charged that the investigators asked biased and slanted questions, selectively edited interviews (for example, giving a two-minute excerpt of a 90-minute interview and portraying that selection as representative), and selectively chose persons to interview supportive of CBS’s point of view. He also charged CBS with editing interview tapes dishonestly and taking statements out of context. Westmoreland charged CBS with reckless misstatements of evidence and contended these distortions indicated malice.[6] The allegations about editing were not borne out by the evidence and the ultimate questions at trial became whether the allegations against Westmoreland were true and whether CBS was entitled to believe the high-ranking military officers who made those allegations in their interviews and stuck by them at trial.

CBS defended the documentary as true and called the military officers in question as witnesses at trial. They testified both at deposition and at trial that their criticisms of Westmoreland had been fairly represented in the documentary and they stood by them. Major General Joseph McChristian, Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence under Westmoreland, testified at trial that when he had presented new increased enemy strength estimates, Westmoreland had responded that sending these figures to Washington would “create a political bombshell” and would “embarrass my commander in chief [President Johnson].” [9] General McChristian testified that, in withholding these figures, Westmoreland, “in being loyal to the President, was disloyal to his country.”[10]

McChristian’s testimony has been seen as a “dramatic, consequential, and determinative of the outcome.”.[11]

After McChristian stepped down, CBS called another military intelligence officer, Col. Gains Hawkins, who had worked under McChristian and Westmoreland. Hawkins’s testimony supported McChristian’s; Hawkins reaffirmed his allegations in his CBS interviews and in the documentary.

Westmoreland’s counsel, Dan Burt, had been hoping for a simple verdict from the jury, finding for Westmoreland or CBS; that way, if Westmoreland lost, he could claim that the jury concluded that the documentary was false, but under the strict legal standard had been unable to find that CBS had acted with “actual malice.”[12] When the trial court judge, the Honorable Pierre Leval, informed counsel that he intended to ask the jury to render separate verdicts on truth, actual malice, and injury, Burt told the Judge he was concerned, because “If he loses on truth, it will kill the old man.”[13] After the conference with the Judge, Burt met with Westmoreland, and the two men agreed to pursue settlement.

On February 18, 1985, shortly after McChristian’s testimony, with Col. Hawkins still on the stand, and with the five-month trial expected to go to the jury within days, Westmoreland agreed to dismiss the case without payment, retraction or apology from CBS. Both sides agreed to pay their own legal fees, and Westmoreland and CBS released simultaneous public statements. CBS stated that it had never intended to say that “General Westmoreland was unpatriotic or disloyal in performing his duties as he saw them.[1][6] Westmoreland said “General Westmoreland respects the long and distinguished journalistic tradition of CBS and the rights of journalists to examine the complex issues of Vietnam and to present perspectives contrary to his own.”[14]

Westmoreland declared “victory,” but later conceded that his team’s “jury watcher” had concluded he was likely to lose.[15] The New York Times reported that Westmoreland had “surrendered to the evidence that . . . he and some of his aides in Vietnam in 1967 manipulated the estimates of enemy strength, apparently for political effect.” “At the end, he stood in imminent danger of having a jury confirm the essential truth of the CBS report. For, in court, as on the original program, the general could not get past the testimony of high-ranking former subordinates who confirmed his having colored some intelligence information.”[16] One of the jurors, speaking to the press when the trial adjourned, stated “The evidence in favor of CBS was overwhelming.” [17]

Westmoreland’s decision to dismiss the case before the jury reached a decision prevented an appeal that might have created a legal landmark. Instead, this high-profile case provided a practical demonstration of what many already understood: That any public figure seeking damages for libel must follow the stringent standards set in the precedent of 376 U.S. 254. Further, a public figure must prove actual malice, as required by New York Times Co. v. Sullivan, even in the face of allegations of media misconduct.[1]

Finally, the case demonstrated an old adage: bringing a libel suit is generally a poor way to burnish a reputation. Westmoreland’s suit brought greater attention to the CBS documentary and its allegations against him; the testimony of high-ranking military officers at trial provided further support for those allegations, in a highly public forum. Allegations that otherwise might have been forgotten are now part of any Westmoreland biography.[9][12]

On the other hand, the lawsuit emboldened wealthy companies and political foundations to sue or threaten to sue in order to chill the press and kill unfavorable press. In 1993, General Motors sued NBC over a Dateline report. In response, NBC management fired the news director and producer and issued a public apology in exchange for GM dropping the suit. In 1994, Philip Morris sued ABC News for an unprecedented $10 billion over the Day One report “Smoke Screen” which exposed their manipulation of nicotine levels,[18] but the case was settled without trial and with an apology.[19] In 1995, the Brown & Williamson tobacco company threatened to sue CBS over a 60 Minutes interview of whistleblower Jeffrey Wigand who exposed a similar manipulation of nicotine, but CBS chose to pull the segment.[20]

The Secret History of the Vietnam Peace Talks: Nixon, Kissinger & Betrayal (2002)

10,543 views Sep 28, 2015

The Paris Peace Accords of 1973 intended to establish peace in Vietnam and an end to the Vietnam War. It ended direct U.S. military combat, and temporarily stopped the fighting between North and South Vietnam. The governments of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam), the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam), and the United States, as well as the Provisional Revolutionary Government (PRG) that represented indigenous South Vietnamese revolutionaries, signed the Agreement on Ending the War and Restoring Peace in Vietnam on January 27, 1973. The agreement was not ratified by the United States Senate.[1][2]

The negotiations that led to the accord began in 1968 after various lengthy delays. As a result of the accord, the International Control Commission (ICC) was replaced by International Commission of Control and Supervision (ICCS) to fulfill the agreement. The main negotiators of the agreement were United States National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger and Vietnamese politburo member Lê Đức Thọ; the two men were awarded the 1973 Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts, although Lê Đức Thọ refused to accept it.

No Peace, No Honor: Nixon, Kissinger, and Betrayal in Vietnam

August 6, 2002 by Larry Berman (Author)

On April 30, 1975, when U.S. helicopters pulled the last soldiers out of Saigon, the question lingered: Had American and Vietnamese lives been lost in vain? When the city fell shortly thereafter, the answer was clearly yes. The Agreement on Ending the War and Restoring Peace in Vietnam — signed by Henry Kissinger in 1973, and hailed as “peace with honor” by President Nixon — was a travesty.

In No Peace, No Honor, Larry Berman reveals the long-hidden truth in secret documents concerning U.S. negotiations that Kissinger had sealed — negotiations that led to his sharing the Nobel Peace Prize. Based on newly declassified information and a complete North Vietnamese transcription of the talks, Berman offers the real story for the first time, proving that there is only one word for Nixon and Kissinger’s actions toward the United States’ former ally, and the tens of thousands of soldiers who fought and died: betrayal.

UK Parliament Select Committee – Masons `had role’ in 1999 Northern Ireland ‘Stalker Affair’ case

Paul Waugh

Wednesday 26 May 1999

FREEMASONRY WITHIN the police may have played a “significant” role in the Stalker affair and corruption in the West Midlands Serious Crimes Squad, MPs have concluded.

The Commons Home Affairs Select Committee published the results yesterday of a two-year inquiry into the influence of masons in public life. The committee quoted several cases of improper interference in police operations and called on the Home Office to speed plans to to disclose which officers were Freemasons.

Voluntary codes requiring judges, police and staff in the Crown Prosecution Service to declare Masonic membership should be toughened and should be accompanied by similar rules for MPs, peers and councillors, the report recommended. The Home Secretary, Jack Straw, should push through his proposals to establish registers of Masonic status.Only three of the country’s 43 police forces have created them.

The committee found that the West Midlands Serious Crimes Squad, which was disbanded over allegations of malpractice, had five senior members who were Freemasons. The MPs concluded that although Freemasonry was not a primary cause of the problems within the squad, “we cannot entirely exclude the possibility that it may have been a contributory factor”.

Freemasonry was not a significant factor in the Birmingham pub bombings investigations by the squad, but the fact that the stipendiary magistrate was a Mason would have given rise to “justifiable public concern” if it had been known.

Freemasonry may also have been a factor in the Stalker affair, in which John Stalker, former Assistant Chief Constable of Manchester, was removed from an investigation into shoot-to-kill policies allegedly conducted by security forces in Northern Ireland. Seven police officers of the rank of superintendent or above involved in the affair were Masons.

There are about 350,000 Freemasons in England and Wales. They said that pressure to declare membership had led to an “unprecedented” wave of resignations.

Belfast Telegraph

December 30 2016

A police chief who investigated an alleged shoot-to-kill policy in Northern Ireland confided in a diplomat that he was not concerned about a cover-up but “murder, six murders”, newly declassified files show.

There were also behind-the-scenes fears that a Masonic plot within the police against John Stalker could be revealed during one of the most controversial episodes of the Troubles, according to the documents marked “Secret”.

Mr Stalker was asked to investigate the RUC shootings of six people but was removed from the inquiry shortly before it was due to report in 1986.

He was taken off the case at the moment he believed he was about to obtain an MI5 tape of one of the shootings.

Suspended over allegations of associating with criminals, he was later cleared of any wrongdoing and reinstated in his job as deputy chief constable of Greater Manchester Police but his report was never published.

Mr Stalker unexpectedly turned up at the opening of the Irish Centre in Manchester in November 1986, just months after his controversial suspension from the inquiry.

Then Irish ambassador to London Noel Dorr wrote to then taoiseach Garret FitzGerald about a brief private conversation with the police chief at the event.

Mr Stalker complained he never had access to politicians at any stage during this inquiry and was “convinced” had he been allowed to talk to then home secretary Douglas Hurd “he would have got attention to what he was saying”.

“Stalker said that what he was trying as forcefully as he could to bring to attention (‘to shout’) was that what he was concerned with was not the minor question of lying or covering something up – ‘it was murder, six murders’,” Mr Dorr wrote.

“He believed very strongly that if he could have got through to Ministers with this message they would have supported him.”

He added: “Instead he had, at all times, to go through the Chief Constable and the Home Office Inspectorate and they blocked and muffled what he wanted to say.”

At the time, Mr Stalker told the Irish diplomat he had completed reports into five of the six deaths as well as 90% of his report into the RUC and “very much feared now that what he had done will be rewritten by other hands”.

“In general he found the RUC were all right except for some people very near the top who were very much to blame,” wrote Mr Dorr.

It was “sad and ironic” that the force’s opposition to his investigation had damaged it much more than had it co-operated, acknowledged wrongdoing and turned over a new leaf, Mr Stalker said to him.

The classified files also revealed a behind-the-scenes furore over Mr Stalker being photographed at the Irish Centre launch along with Dublin’s then foreign affairs minister Peter Barry.

Secretary of state Tom King summoned a senior Irish official in Belfast and “using very strong language … for some time” let it be known he was extremely shocked to see the photo in the newspapers.

“He said the impact in Northern Ireland was damaging and that the police believed that the minister had deliberately set up the situation to support Stalker and demoralise them,” Mr King told the official, according to the notes.

Some months beforehand in July, a senior Irish official met with Andrew Mackay MP, then parliamentary private secretary to Mr King, for lunch in London.

During the meeting, Mr Mackay – who would later become shadow secretary of state for Northern Ireland – said he feared a police plot against Mr Stalker.

“On the Stalker affair, he sincerely hopes that a Masonic or other plot within the police to stifle Stalker will not be revealed,” the MP told the official, according to notes of the meeting.

“If it is, he believes that the implications would be wide-reaching and very serious: certainly involving, he feels, (RUC Chief Constable John) Hermon’s resignation.

“He hoped, rather, that the matter will be resolved in such a way as to allow the contents of the report to be finalised and acted on.”

Tom Kington, Rome

Italian politicians will be forced to declare whether they are freemasons under laws being drawn up after revelations that mafia bosses are joining lodges to strike deals with elected officials.

The legislation is being proposed after police raids on the four largest freemasonry orders in Italy discovered 193 mob-linked masons on the orders’ secret membership lists in Sicily and Calabria, southern Italy.

The findings were published last month by the Italian parliament’s anti-mafia commission, which alleged that mobsters used secret lodge meetings to do business with politicians and entrepreneurs. Laws proposed by the commission would ban magistrates from joining the masons and compel public officials to say if they are members.

Rosy Bindi, the commission president, said she also hoped to compel masons to…

Ties between the Mob and the masons are close in Calabria

Tom Kington, Rome

Strong links between Italy’s secretive freemasons and the mafia have been exposed by police raids, with 193 crime bosses found to be members of lodges in Calabria and Sicily.

The investigation has confirmed long-standing accusations by magistrates and mob turncoats that freemason lodges in southern Italy are often venues for secret deals with corrupt judges, politicians and business owners.

The mafia’s enthusiastic participation in freemasonry “has led some to believe that the two have become one and the same”, according to a report this month from an anti-mafia parliamentary commission. Masons were “acquiescent” and “tolerant” of the takeover, it added.

The raids were ordered after the heads of Italy’s four main freemasonry orders refused to hand over their membership lists. “It was impossible to get…

Las Vegas Needs to Lure Back Tourists, But Some Vow Never to Return

Itay Hod

Karen Buling’s fifth trip to Las Vegas started with the sound of gunshots. Moments after she checked into the Luxor Hotel, she and her sister barricaded themselves into their room and prayed the person shooting at the country music festival across the street wouldn’t target them, too.

They turned out to be safe. But Buling said the allure of Vegas is gone for her. “It was the most terrifying thing I’ve ever been through,” the Cleveland medical assistant told The Wrap. “I will not come back.”

Las Vegas is built on tourists’ dollars, and as it tries to recover from the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, it badly needs tourists like Buling to return. But for some of them, that is unthinkable.

CBC: Out of office, into the woods – Bro. Stephen Harper’s trip to secret Bohemian summer camp – Ex-PM joined male elite California retreat for a ‘nice discussion,’ Bro. Colin Powell says in hacked email

Stephen Harper hasn’t said much about his activities since he announced his intention to leave politics. Sure, we know he’s starting a consulting business. And yes, he’s made it known via social media that his firm arranged for office space and a strategic partnership with a large law firm in Calgary.

But what he’s been doing to build up that international clientele for his firm, Harper and Associates? What is the suddenly reclusive former prime minister doing to turn his political connections into paying customers?

Well, now we have at least some insight, obtained via hackers who penetrated the private email account of former U.S. secretary of state Colin Powell.

Among the emails made public, and widely reported by media around the world, is one Powell sent July 24 to his friend Peter MacKay, the former Harper cabinet minister.

bohemian grove masonic nixon

And let’s just preface what comes next by saying not only is the way the information became public unusual, but so is where Harper and Powell rubbed shoulders.

“Peter: I am back from the Bohemian Grove,” Powell writes. “Surprise, Surprise, I sat next to Stephen Harper a couple of times and had a nice discussion.”

For those who don’t know, the Bohemian Grove is an annual event in California that the Washington Post described in a 2011 article as “two weeks of heavy-drinking, super-secret talks, druid worship and other rituals” by some of the richest and most powerful men in the world.

The invited guests include business leaders. Politicians. Artists. All of them men. And it’s been that way for nearly a century.

Harper Trudeau Mulcair Masonic Five Points of Fellowship

Not many journalists have made it past the gates to the tents set among the towering stands of redwoods. One who did, described a nine-metre-high owl that symbolizes the wisdom of those attending, writing that the owl serves as the backdrop for the annual theatrical production put on by and for those in attendance.

There’s one rule. No business can be conducted.

What Harper was doing there, whether he’s a member of the Bohemian Club or just a guest, isn’t known. Former colleagues say it’s the first they’ve heard of him attending the retreat.

Attempts to contact Harper were unsuccessful.

But anyone who followed his political career must find the idea of the former prime minister drinking heavily hard to imagine, or for that matter, his communing among the redwoods with like-minded conservatives, engaging in the worship of trees or animals as his personal spiritual source.

He was always, while in office, dismissive of elites.

What is consistent is that he would surround himself with other small-c conservatives intent on keeping the world out of the clutches of Democrats, Liberals and the similarly unenlightened.

Now, Harper is free to do what he likes. But keep this in mind: He was attending an event sponsored by a group that refuses to admit women.

Colin Powell Masonic Handsign

That excludes the interim leader of his party, Rona Ambrose, and Kellie Leitch, a potential Harper successor whose campaign is built around screening immigrants for “anti-Canadian values” like, say, inclusiveness and equality, transparency and openness. The very values this club eschews.

The one exception, it appears, is that those rich Bohemian men can worship whoever, or whatever they please.

Email is authentic, MacKay says

colin powell masonic gesture

MacKay, in a brief email exchange, says he’s never attended the retreat. But he confirmed the authenticity of the email Powell sent him.

For most of the world Powell’s chat with Harper is not the most significant item contained in the email.

All of the coverage has been focused on his line that follows.

“Grove attendees know that Trump is a disaster,” Powell wrote to MacKay. “Most will vote against, but quite a few will not vote for Hillary and will vote for a third-party candidate.”

By Grove attendees Powell means, of course, wealthy, well-connected Republicans.

Bro. Conrad Black: Celebrating the end of the Bro. Mike Duffy ‘farce’ – National Post

My absence in England last week prevented me from celebrating the acquittal of Mike Duffy in this column, but there are a few points still to be made about it. There was never anything wrong with Mike Duffy padding around promoting the Conservative party while a paid-up senator. MPs do that and there is nothing wrong with senators doing it. There was nothing wrong with Nigel Wright paying Duffy’s alleged excesses on his travel expenses. A friend can do that — nothing wrong with it and typical of Nigel to come to a friend’s assistance.

nigel wright

(Duffy is now arguably the principal Atlantic provinces representative of the Conservative party in Parliament). Of course, Duffy had no business expensing his physical trainer, but from appearances, the trainer has not been notably successful anyway. Mike is no fitness magazine centrefold, but he has special medical problems and presumably the trainer helped him fulfill his designated role as a senator.

Asking the chairman of the management committee of the Toronto Club, Canada’s ultimate source of misdirected sanctimony, Senator Irving Gerstein, to question the Senate’s auditor, or even to try to alter its audit, was shabby and unwise. Gerstein, given the onerous moral standard he must uphold as chair of the most pompous committee in the country except the Supreme Court, should have declined the mission; he would not have risked anything by doing so as he is as inseparable from his senatorial emoluments as Duffy. But no illegality was intended or even contemplated…

Masters of the Universe: Goldman Sachs Hires Former E.U. President Bro. José Manuel Barroso As Advisor

Zero Hedge

Jul 8, 2016

by Tyler Durden

Having cornered the central banker market, with its alumni manning key positions at most central banks, Goldman has decided to tip its cards into its next zone of interest: geopolitics, and has done so by hiring none other than the former head of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker’s predecessor and one-time Nigel Farage nemesis, Jose Manuel Barroso as an advisor and non-executive chairman of its international business.

Barroso served as president of the European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, from 2004 to 2014 and was prime minister of Portugal from 2002 to 2004.

According to Reuters, Goldman and other banks “are seen as particularly vulnerable to Brexit since they rely on the EU’s “passporting” regime that allows them to offer services across the bloc while basing most of their staff and operations in the UK. Banks have warned that if their British outposts lose their “passports” they will have to move some employees and business units to alternative bases in the EU.” Whether this means that Goldman is merely seeking an influential lobbying voice when it comes to getting an exemption from a post-Brexit fallout, or is simply seeking to expand its influence over all of Europe, remains unclear. After all it is not as if Goldman’s European ambitions are unknown. As we have shown before, Goldman is already the undisputed “Master of the Eurozone” courtesy of strategy placements in all key decision-making venues.

Eurpean Commission. Goldman Sachs

Goldman Sachs International, which Barroso will chair, is headquartered in London and of its roughly 6,000 staff fewer than 1,000 are based outside Britain.

Barroso is credited with helping the euro zone survive the 2009-13 debt crisis by establishing a financial rescue fund, enacting stricter budget rules and tightening financial regulation. He was also a signatory to the Lisbon Treaty that revamped the bloc’s complex institutions after French and Dutch voters rejected a European constitution.

Barroso will help the firm as it advises clients on dealing with the ensuing “challenging and uncertain economic and market environment,” Goldman Sachs International co-chiefs Michael Sherwood and Richard Gnodde said in the statement.

Goldman’s full press release is below:

Goldman Sachs International today announced the appointment of José Manuel Barroso as non-executive chairman of Goldman Sachs International (GSI). He will also be an advisor to Goldman Sachs.

José Manuel served as president of the European Commission from 2004 to 2014, and as prime minister of Portugal from 2002 to 2004. His perspective, judgment and counsel will add great value to our GSI Board of Directors, Goldman Sachs, our shareholders and our people.

Having first been elected to the Portuguese Parliament in 1985, José Manuel served as state secretary for home affairs, state secretary for foreign affairs and cooperation, and minister for foreign affairs in successive governments. In 1999, he was elected president of the Social Democratic Party and became the leader of the opposition. Prior to his political career, José Manuel’s academic positions included visiting professor at Georgetown University. Most recently, he was Frederick H. Schultz Class of 1951 visiting professor of International Economic Policy and a policy fellow at the Liechtenstein Institute, Woodrow Wilson School, at Princeton University. He is also visiting professor at the Catolica University in Lisbon and at the University of Geneva and the Graduate Institute of International Relations in the same city.

José Manuel has been awarded numerous honorary degrees and has received more than 60 decorations, prizes and honors, including Portugal’s Gra-Cruz da Ordem Militar de Cristo and Grande Colar da Ordem do Infante Dom Henrique.

Cardinal Burke: it’s reasonable to be afraid of Islam’s desire to govern the world – Catholic Herald UK

Catholic Herald UK

by Staff Reporter

Cardinal Burke

Cardinal Burke (AP)

The cardinal said the best response was to fortify the Christian foundation of our societies

Cardinal Raymond Burke has said there is “no question that Islam wants to govern the world”, and that Western societies should return to their Christian roots.

Speaking to David Gibson of Religion News Service, Cardinal Burke, the patron of the Order of Malta, said Muslims were “lovely people” who themselves talked about religion “in a very peaceful manner”.

But he said too few people understood the tradition of Islamic thought on government: that, when Muslims became a majority population, “they have the religious obligation to govern that country. If that’s what the citizens of a nation want, well, then, they should just allow this to go on. But if that’s not what they want, then they have to find a way to deal with it.”

Cardinal Burke said that, for anyone “not at peace with the idea of being under an Islamic government”, it was reasonable to be “afraid” of such a prospect.

The cardinal was speaking ahead of the publication of a new book, Hope for the World: To Unite All Things in Christ. Like books by Pope Francis and Benedict XVI, and God or Nothing by Cardinal Robert Sarah, the book takes the form of an extended interview. The interviewer is Guillaume d’Alançon, a writer who also works for a French diocese.

In the book, Cardinal Burke says: “Islam is a religion that, according to its own interpretation, must also become the State. The Koran, and the authentic interpretations of it given by various experts in Koranic law, is destined to govern the world.

“In reality, there is no place for other religions, even though they may be tolerated, as long as Islam has not succeeded in establishing its sovereignty over the nations and over the world.”

The cardinal says that Islam and Christianity are radically different. In the interview with Gibson, he says that Church leaders are mistaken if they “simply think that Islam is a religion like the Catholic faith or the Jewish faith”, rather than recognising its ambitions to govern.

He argues that tolerance is a feature of Christian charity, and that the right response is “to be firm about the Christian origin of our own nation, and certainly in Europe, and the Christian foundations of the government, and to fortify those”.

Cardinal Burke has made similar comments in the past. In 2014, he told the newspaper Una Voce Austria that “the Muslim life is taking over in countries which were formerly Christian”, partly thanks to high birthrate.

Last year, the cardinal said in an interview with a French newspaper: “we must remember that Islam is a government, not just a religion”.

Vice News: New Evidence Suggests Israel Is Helping Syrian Rebels in the Golan Heights

Vice News

December 7, 2014 | 1:58 pm

By Samuel Oakford

Israel continues to interact with Syrian rebels in the Golan Heights and allow them to cross the border, according to a new UN report corroborated by a VICE News team that visited the area in November, uncovering additional incidents beyond what has been described by the UN.

Israel has occupied the Golan Heights since the Six-Day War in 1967, when it captured it from Syria. In 1974, a UN peacekeeping mission, known as UNDOF, was established to police a 50-mile-long disengagement zone between the Israeli “Alpha” and Syrian “Bravo” lines. At the disengagement zone’s narrowest southern points, the distance between the two lines can be less than a kilometer.

A report by Secretary General Ban Ki Moon that was delivered to the Security Council earlier this week describes several incidents that brought Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in contact with rebels. On October 27, UN peacekeepers observed IDF soldiers opening a gate and allowing two individuals to pass from the Syrian Bravo line into the Israeli Alpha side.

Israel maintains it only allows entrance to the wounded on humanitarian grounds, however the UN did not indicate that the two were injured in any way, and said they appeared to have crossed into the Israeli side under their own power.

In August of this year, rebels captured several important border crossings, effectively rendering the disengagement zone obsolete in some places. Fighting in parts of the zone has seen shells land inside Israel, and the IDF has retaliated with fire over the border. In September, Israel shot down a Syrian air force plane it claimed had veered across the Alpha line. In his report, Ban said UN personnel did not observe the plane cross into the area of separation or Israeli controlled territory, and noted that the plane crashed on the Syrian “Bravo side.”

On August 28, al Qaeda-affiliated Jabhat al Nusra captured 45 Fijian peacekeepers and trapped 72 Filipino troops at another location. After a firefight with rebels, all the Filipino peacekeepers were able to escape. On September 11, al Nusra released the Fijians. Following the incidents, UNDOF relocated most of their personnel to Israeli-controlled territory to the west of the Alpha line.

In his report delivered this week, Ban reported that after the evacuation, UNDOF personnel “sporadically observed armed members of the opposition interacting with IDF across the ceasefire line.”

Ban also reported that during the UN’s retreat, peacekeepers were unable to secure all of their “assets and equipment.” Left behind, those materials likely fell into the hands of the al Nusra fighters that control parts of the disengagement zone.

In November, VICE News sent a video team to the Golan Heights where they witnessed and recorded occurrences similar to those outlined by the UN. The team saw IDF soldiers treating wounded Syrian fighters along the border. Though VICE News could not confirm the affiliation of the fighters, some of the rebels being treated by Israel had long hair, a characteristic that is associated with members of the al Nusra Front.

Once the patients were stabilized, Israeli forces moved them to hospitals outside of the Golan Heights and inside Israel proper. At one hospital, VICE News spoke with a patient who identified himself as a member of the Free Syrian Army. He said that after recovering he hoped to return to fight in Syria. The Free Syrian Army is reportedly cooperating with al Nusra in parts of the Golan Heights.

Ban’s report is only the latest to describe the transfer of wounded individuals from Syria to Israeli-controlled territory. In a December 2013 report, the UN said it had had observed “at least 10 wounded persons being transferred by armed members of the opposition from the Bravo side across the ceasefire line to the IDF.” The reports, issued every three months, are filled with similar accounts. Some of those who cross into Israel are local shepherds and civilians fleeing shelling, but the UN’s reports clearly indicate contact and coordination between the IDF and Syrian rebels.

In a June report, the UN said it witnessed “IDF on the Alpha side handing over two boxes to armed members of the opposition on the Bravo side.” It remains unclear what was inside the boxes.

The Syrian government has complained about what it considers to be an Israeli attempt to coordinate against their military and run the UN out of the disengagement area. The presence of peacekeepers in the Golan Heights has long served as a reminder that the international community still considers the annexed territory part of Syria.

“Israel is most interested in having peacekeepers evacuated from the occupied Golan so as to be left without international monitoring,” Syrian ambassador to the UN Bashar al Jaafari told reporters in September.

On Sunday, Syria accused Israel of bombing sites outside of Damascus, including one near the Syrian capital’s international airport.

“This aggression demonstrates Israel’s direct involvement in supporting terrorism in Syria along with well-known regional and Western countries to raise the morale of terrorist groups, mainly the Nusra Front,” the Syrian military said in a statement published on the government press agency SANA’s website.

Meanwhile, UNDORF’s numbers are dwindling. In September, the Philippines withdrew their 344 peacekeepers — a full quarter of the UN’s presence — from the mission. As of early November, only 929 troops from Fiji, India, Ireland, Nepal, and the Netherlands remain.

VICE News reporters Simon Ostrovsky and Andrew Glazer contributed to this report.

Gifts From Uncle Sam: Al-Qaeda Wages War in Syria With US Weaponry – Sputnik News

The Al-Nusra Front, Al-Qaeda’s affiliate in Syria, has released a grateful video, where they openly thank the Free Syrian Army (FSA), which the US has touted as a “moderate opposition group”, for supplying them with US-made anti-tank TOW missiles (“Tube-launched, Optically tracked, Wire-guided”).

A recently released video shows an Al-Nusra Front field commander thanking the FSA commanders for giving his forces TOW missiles, according to a report released by the Iranian news agency FARS.

The agency reminds readers that the two groups, the Al-Nusra and the FSA, formed an alliance in March, the Army of Conquest, or Jaish al-Fatah in Arabic, to fight against the forces of President Assad.

Since then, they have fought together “at almost every single battle in Aleppo, Lattakia, Hama, and Idlib Governorates of Syria.”

Through this alliance several militant groups like the Al-Nusra Front and the Ahrar al-Sham movement have been given access to FSA’s US-made heavy weaponry, which has been supplied to the militant group by the US, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

According to the agency’s estimates, Saudi Arabia sent 500 TOW missiles to Al-Nusra directly last month.

The US, however, claims that it is just supplying aid and weapons to FSA or the so-called moderate militant groups in Syria.

The BGM-71 TOW is one of the most widely-used guided anti-tank missiles. The weapon is used in anti-armor, anti-bunker, anti-fortification and anti-amphibious landing roles.

TOW missiles are used by the armed forces of more than 40 countries and are integrated in over 15,000 ground, vehicle and helicopter platforms worldwide.

Syria White Helmets: Humanitarians or Executioners?

UK Column
Published on May 20, 2016

In this UK Column News special, Mike Robinson speaks to Vanessa Beeley about Syria’s “first responder” group, the White Helmets who are being pushed forward for nomination for a Nobel Peace Prize. Do they deserve it?

News & Politics

White Helmets: Follow the Money

The White Helmets were established in March 2013, in Istanbul, Turkey, and is headed by James Le Mesurier, a British “security” specialist and ‘ex’ British military intelligence officer with an impressive track record in some of the most dubious NATO intervention theatres including Bosnia and Kosovo, as well as Iraq, Lebanon, and Palestine. Le Mesurier is a product of Britain’s elite Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst, and has also been placed in a series of high-profile pasts at the United Nations, European Union, and U.K. Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

The origins of The White Helmet’s initial $300k seed funding is a little hazy, reports are contradictory but subsequent information leads us to conclude that the UK, US and the ‘Syrian Opposition’ [or Syrian National Council, parallel government backed an funded by the US, UK and allies] are connected. Logistical support has been provided and given by Turkish elite natural disaster response team, AKUT.

A further $13 million was poured into the White Helmet coffers during 2013 and this is where it gets interesting. Early reports suggest that these “donations” came from the US, UK and SNC with the previously explored connections to George Soros in the US.

However, subsequent investigations reveal that USAID has been a major shareholder in the White Helmet organisation.

The website for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) claims that “our work supports long-term and equitable economic growth and advances U.S. foreign policy objectives by supporting: economic growth, agriculture and trade; global health; and, democracy, conflict prevention and humanitarian assistance.”
In a USAID report update in July 2015 it is clearly stated that they have supplied over $ 16m in assistance to the White Helmets.

The USAID track record as a primary US Government/CIA regime change facilitator is extensively documented. From South America to the Ukraine and in the Middle East, USAID serve a malevolent and ultimately destructive role in the dismantling of sovereign nations and their reduction to Western hegemony vassal states, as always, all in the name of freedom and democracy.

With recent developments in Syria and as a consequence of the Syrian Government requested Russian intervention, we have seen a scramble to justify the shambolic US foreign policy and its clandestine terror operations in Syria. We have previously established the White Helmet connections to this US regime change operation and their undisputed exclusive integration into the Al Nusra and Free Syrian Army [Muslim Brotherhood] and even ISIS networks and strongholds.

Swedish Doctors for Human Rights: White Helmets Video, Macabre Manipulation of Dead Children and Staged Chemical Weapons Attack to Justify a “No-Fly Zone” in Syria

New findings published 17 March: White Helmets Movies: Updated Evidence From Swedish Doctors Confirm Fake ‘Lifesaving’ and Malpractices on Children

The Alleged Sarin Attack

There has been a recent, intense, publicity campaign that has capitalised on the Oscar for best documentary being awarded to the NATO and Gulf state funded organization, the White Helmets and their Netflix documentary producers. [1] The White Helmets had previously been winners of the “Alternative Nobel Prize”, given to them in Sweden in 2016. [2] These various awards have ensured that the White Helmet fictitious “saving-children-lives” videos have been re-circulating across corporate and social media, a major PR coup for the sponsors of this questionable organization.

Central to this PR campaign and just prior to the Oscar award ceremony, Human Rights Watch published a “retrospective” report on February 13th 2017, focusing on spurious accounts of chemical attacks on the recently liberated city of Aleppo. This familiar HRW propaganda piece recycled a previous report from April 2015 detailing an alleged chlorine gas attack in Sarmin, Idlib [4].

Footage of the aftermath of this attack was provided, at the time, by none other than the White Helmets, which brings us to the macabre video, uploaded by this alleged first responder NGO to YouTube on March 15th 2015. [5]

Ken Roth has waged a longstanding campaign for military intervention in Syria and the No Fly Zone, effectively a declaration of war

The “Sarmin attack” report published by HRW in April 2015 is, in itself, a remarkable feat of evidence engineering. HRW refers to two witnesses – anonymous “Sarmin residents” – stating they have “heard” helicopters “shortly before the attack”. They heard them but did not see them. Both witnesses also reported hearing “no explosions”. [4] In the entire HRW report there is not one reported sighting of a helicopter, the existence of which should be an essential element of the White Helmet claims, uncritically reproduced by HRW and never questioned by the UN.

One of the key witnesses cited in the HRW, April 2015, report is a White Helmet operative by the name of Leith Fares: [6]

“Leith Fares, a rescue worker with Syrian Civil Defence, told Human Rights Watch. “A helicopter always drops two barrels.” “You know, we were at first actually happy,” Fares said. “It is usually good news when there is no explosion.” [4]

A notably peculiar factor of the White Helmet footage of this alleged attack is that they do not film any external shots of the attack itself, despite their declared anticipation of being targeted, having “heard” helicopters.

Instead, the only footage is of an enclosed indoor space with no contextual filming to evidence where they are in Syria or that an attack has just taken place. The indoor environment certainly resembles a makeshift hospital emergency room. White Helmet “rescuers” parade in and out, manhandling and maneuvering the limp, lifeless bodies of three children. The naked bodies of these children have no external, visible injuries and do not respond when the various “medics” perform all manner of ostensibly “life-saving” procedures, in a haphazard effort to resuscitate these children.

“A Macabre Scene”

In order to obtain qualified clinical opinions, I sent the video uploaded by White Helmets to eminent Swedish medical specialists. I stressed that, particular attention, must be paid to the Syringe needle procedure (seemingly, intracardiac injection) carried out on one of the children. [Click on the image for a clip from the video, showing the syringe-needle scene]:

Syrian Gas Attack Is A Lie?

Inessa S
Published on Apr 7, 2017

On April 7th, US warships delivered an illegal blow to a Syrian airbase in Homs. Their justification was the recent “chemical weapon” attack on behalf of the Syrian government in Idlib. The Kremlin condemned the strike as an act of aggression against a sovereign state, and a violation of international law. Meanwhile, at the UN, representatives of Western governments attempt to push through a resolution that is based on information taken out of thin air. It includes the removal of Assad, whether or not he was behind the attack.

It is noteworthy, that the only real source of information on what took place, are the videos made by the White Helmets, an infamous propaganda organisation as it pertains to the Syrian civil war. In this clip, Maria Zakharova calls on Western respresenatives/ journalists to hear Russia, and what it has to say. The attack against the Syrian government, much like the Ghouta gas attack in 2013, which precipitated the Syrian civil war, is a giant facade for the military industrial warhawks in the US, to put their money where their mouth is.

Express: Does hand sign made by Merkel, May and now Juncker prove there is a secret E.U. illuminati?

Does hand sign made by Merkel, May and now Juncker prove there is a secret EU illuminati?

SPECULATION is mounting there is a secret society within the EU after senior figures were snapped making the same masonic-style hand signal.

Fri, Jul 22, 2016 | UPDATED: Mon, Jul 25, 2016

European Commission President Jean Claude Juncker was the latest EU bigwig to be photographed “giving the code” after he was snapped with his hands in the rhombus shape – known as a Merkel Diamond – while talking to Queen Mathilde of Belgium and King Philippe of Belgium during the Te Deum mass at the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula in Brussels, Belgium, yesterday.

It comes after new British Prime Minster Theresa May was pictured separately making the same hand gesture earlier this month.

German chancellor Angela Merkel has been snapped so many times making the shape, which involves pressing the thumbs and index fingers together to create a diamond, that her name was added to its official description.

Mrs May was snapped imitating the ‘Merkel diamond’ while giving a speech outside the Palace of Westminster on July 11.

Conspiracy theory website illuminatiRex lists the diamond sign as number one out of a top-ten of illuminati signs, with Mrs Merkel given her own section for doing it in reverse, in what it describes as the Merkel Raute.

And on the conspiracy theory forum run by David Icke, the significance of the Merkel Diamond, which has been used in political poster campaigns, has been discussed.

A senior forum member with the user name Posidon posted: “I don’t know if any one even notice the Angela Merkel famous hand sign?

“I found today a new picture of it in my local newspaper, and I found curious that they use her hand sign in a political campaign.

“They call it the famous ‘diamond’.

“Diamond they say? So I ask, is every one asleep these days?

Jean Claude Juncke

“Just the first time I saw the image, I noticed it is not a diamond at all, plus the way she placed her fingers (which is not even easy) unless you really want them to be that way does not resemble a diamond at all, but a Masonic symbol of the compass and square.

“Is every one asleep? No one sees and talks about these things, is it not evident enough?”

When Mrs May used the symbol this month, Twitter users immediately drew comparisons between May and Merkel and questioned the significance of the “code”.

Politician Memet Killic, from Germany’s Green Party, wrote: “Merkel now has found a hand gesture competitor in Theresa May.”

Theresa May

Garion Coyote took a further dig at Mrs May by replying: “Both can compete for the s***test hairstyle among heads of state.”

And journalist Tilo Jung compared her to Ms Merkel’s closest ally. He branded her the “British version of Thomas de Maiziere on crack”.

But, Ms Merkel, who has led the Christian Democratic Union party for 16 years, explained the reason she makes the unusual gesture in a 2013 interview, and denied there was anything sinister behind it.

She told a German magazine: “There was always the question, what to do with your arms, and that’s how it came about. It contains a certain symmetry.”

Other famous faces including Gordon Brown, the Duchess of Cornwall and Recep Tayyip Erdogan have also been spotted making the ‘Merkel diamond’.

Deseret News: Utah Freemasons will install new officers with centuries-old rituals

Utah Freemasons will install new officers with centuries-old rituals

Feb. 3, 2017

By Kelsey Dallas

Provided by the Grand Lodge of Utah Freemasons
Robert Wolfarth of Salt Lake City will be installed as Grand Master of the Utah Freemasons Saturday, Feb. 4.

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake Masonic Temple, home to the centuries-old and mysterious rituals of the Utah Freemasons, will be open to the public this weekend during a ceremony celebrating the 2017 Grand Lodge officer corps.

“This is a good opportunity to have people come to that big building on South Temple and see what really goes on there,” said Robert Wolfarth, who will be installed as Grand Master Saturday night.

The event will pull back the curtain on a fraternity that’s best known for its secrecy.

“This is a ceremony that’s been going on since before we were a country. It’s an event that’s happened all over the U.S. for hundreds of years,” said John Liley, chairman of the Utah Masons’ public relations committee.

Freemasonry has been present on the American continent since at least the early 18th century when it was referenced in settlers’ writings. However, its core rituals are much older, as the Deseret News reported in 2008.

“Many believe it originated with the stone masons who worked on Solomon’s Temple in Jerusalem, though no definitive evidence of that legend is known to exist. Others speculate that its tenets were had by (Old Testament prophets) Enoch, and possibly by Adam. Scholars have documented evidence that institutional Masonry dates back only to the Middle Ages when great European cathedrals were being built by guilds of stone masons who practiced ‘the craft,'” the article noted.

Famous freemasons include many of the nation’s founding fathers, and early leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, such as Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, who were masons.

The focus of Freemasonry is personal growth and community improvement. Members who attend gatherings at their local lodge can be chosen as representatives to statewide meetings.

“It’s a path for good men to become better through self-improvement and then to turn around and improve the world around them,” Wolfarth said.

While Freemasonry is not a faith community, masons must believe in a supreme being. Additionally, potential members have to be at least 18 and have no criminal record, Liley noted.

He estimated that there are currently around 1,900 Utah Freemasons. A few hundred of them are expected to attend Saturday’s ceremony, where they will help nonmembers understand the event.

“Masons will be able to talk to anyone who wants to learn more,” Wolfarth said.

In addition to the installation of Wolfarth as Grand Master, the ceremony will include recognition of the more than 15 other officers who support his work.

“Each member will be installed individually. The public will get to hear exactly what the officer is expected to do during 2017,” Wolfarth said.

His duties for the year ahead include administrative tasks like forming and closing lodges, convening meetings and serving as the public face of the Utah Freemasons. He’ll also have a chance to update some of the organization’s internal practices as well as encourage bridges to be built between lodges and their surrounding community.

“I’m pushing our organization to become more efficient and electronic, especially in terms of communication,” said Wolfarth, 54, who is a senior manager at Merit Medical Systems in South Jordan. “I also want to increase our outreach into the community through charity and education.”

Wolfarth and Liley said they hope this weekend’s public ceremony will support their efforts to help Utahns understand what Freemasonry entails.

“The event itself is a wonderful showcase. I look forward to being able to showcase Freemasonry to the public … and dispel some of its mystique,” Wolfarth said.

“It might be cold outside and it might be a Saturday night, but we’re cheaper than a movie,” Liley noted.

The Utah Freemasons 145th annual installation ceremony begins Saturday, Feb. 4, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Salt Lake Masonic Temple, located at 650 E. South Temple.

BBC: Jersey Freemasons anniversary church service request rejected – Reverend Chris Jervis said granting the request would have been problematic due to an inconsistency between Christianity and Freemasonry

Jersey Freemasons anniversary church service request rejected

The Freemason lodge in Jersey marked 200 years on the island in 2012

The Freemason lodge in Jersey marked 200 years on the island in 2012

Next year Freemasons will celebrate the founding of the first lodge in 1717 with services set to take place in major religious buildings worldwide.

Reverend Chris Jervis said granting the request would have been “problematic” due to an “inconsistency between Christianity and freemasonry”.

Jersey provincial grand master Ken Rondel, said he was disappointed.

Next year more than 20 cathedrals will host services across England to mark the event.

Mr Rondel said: “I wrote to the Dean of Jersey, The Very Reverend Bob Key in 2013 and he deliberated over it and responded saying he didn’t think it would be appropriate.

“The only reason he gave was that he didn’t feel his church wardens would accept us attending.”

Mr Jervis said it was due to the purpose of the building and he was “standing firm on this one”.

“Within the context of the building, which is set aside for Christian Worship, it would be problematic to have something that is multi-faith,” he said.

“I know of others and I accept that but I can’t tie that up. Yes they are disappointed, good and honourable people, that is not the issue.”

Former grand master, David Rosser, said they had applied to use other churches but needed a space suitable for more than 300 people.

He said: “We could hold it anywhere, even in the town hall, but I don’t expect it would give us the same verve I’m expecting a church will give us.”

The Catholic and Methodist churches also rejected requests to host services.
