Investigation Continues Into Execution Style MurderCommunity Leader Gunned Down

Mar. 24, 2006 - KGO - San Francisco Police searched several Chinatown offices today in their investigation of the execution style murder of a Chinese community leader.

Investigators have been quietly working on the case since the murder almost a month ago. Today's searches in Chinatown were also low profile. Only unmarked police cars outside. Investigators knocked on the doors, they showed the occupants their search warrants and went inside.

Police investigators hit two locations in Chinatown early this morning, both with ties to the shooting victim Allen Leung.

Leung was elder of the Hop Sing Tong, one of Chinatown's most powerful fraternal organizations. Inspectors also searched the offices of Chee Kung Tung, the Chinese Freemasons, a group that Leung headed.

Dep. Chief Morris Tabak, SFPD: "There were search warrants executed in hopes of gleaning additional evidence including, but not limited to, documents and other items that may shed a light on the night Mr. Leung was killed."

The 56-year-old Chinese community leader was murdered February 27th.

Police are investigating possible motives, among them the fact that his assailant walked into his store on Jackson Street, shot him four times in the head and ran off. Leung, as head of the Freemasons, had been involved in a lawsuit with the New York branch over a large sum of money. Last year, Leung had gone to the FBI saying he feared for his life after he and other Hop Sing Tong leaders turned down an extortion attempt by younger members of the group.

The search at the Freemasons was prolonged because homicide inspectors had to call a safecracker to open an old safe. He finally arrived in the early afternoon. Inspectors carried out boxes of documents at the Freemasons as well as at the Hop Sing Tong.

Dep. Chief Tabak: "We feel we've gotten additional leads that took us to this place today. Some progress has been made and as a result of information obtained today more progress will be made in this case."
